• New Don Pedro dam project: 7/18/1968

Directors of the Modesto Irrigation District and the Modesto City Council and staff members jointly toured the New Don Pedro Dam site Thursday, July 18, 1968. The MID, the Turlock Irrigation District and the. City and County of San Francisco are partners in the $100 million project. Members of both touring groups yesterday agreed the trip helped create an understanding of the problems both groups face. Mayor Lee H. Davies saw the joint tour as a continuation of a spirit of. cooperation between the two bodies which began a few weeks ago when the city asked the MID for free power to light the city’s streets. The mayor said free power would allow the city to accelerate its program of bringing present lights up to standard and lighting dark areas. The MID rejected the request. but agreed -to a 50-50 capital cost sharing program, which would eventually cost the MID $1 million or more. Progress on the New Don Pedro project is beginning to show, for the first time. as earth movers and heavy equipment scar the landscape in preparation for construction of the spill-'dam’s foundation.
The New Don Pedro will be the fifth largest dam in California, only a fraction smaller than the San Luis Dam. San Luis will have a storage capacity of 2.095.000-acre feet New Don Pedro will be the second tallest dam in California constructed by Guy F. Atkinson, measuring 585 feet
